Final Projects and Life Lessons!

So lately I've been realizing how important painting is to me, which sort of scares me. I've also slept only like 2.5 hours in the past 33 hours so many things currently scare me. Besides that, it's sort of overwhelming to admit that you're passionate about something that you don't get much practice in, that you don't feel completely confident in, or that you think everyone else wants to be doing in the future. Being in school is weird because you have access to so many things and you sometimes put too much pressure on 'specialties.' Maybe I'm the only one, but finals have gotten me thinking and I've decided that it's okay to like whatever you like and to knowingly accept that art is sometimes about figuring that out. It's about the journey, not the final product.

Anyways! Lengthy intro but here's a piece for school that got me thinking about what I'm supposed to be. Who knows what that is! But I learned a lot from this piece and though I may not be happy with the conclusion of it, I enjoyed making it.

Thanks for takin' a look :)
Happy Holidays everybody!

Sad Turtle

Here's a recent painting I did for my Drawing for Animators class. Really fun and I learned a lot about landscapes and textures. Hope to finish this someday to a disgusting level of detail but until then, enjoy!

He's from an earlier post when we made characters from abstract silhouettes and doodles.

*values of course not perfect on blogspot, but close enough ;)

Updates! School year! Yahh!

School is awesome, I love everything!

Here's two projects that I've finished up, this first chunk is all from a design lab that explored different methods of creating characters and then we rendered them!

The chosen designs I finished up:

Process work:

Here's the start of my caricature project that we just finished up, I posted this one up on facebook if you're friends with me :) But it was about pushing traits that are most prevalent in people/characters and I had a lot of fun.

(and it gave me a chance to paint my favorite, SeƱor Andy Samberg <3 )

Here's me! (sorta) ((expect a painting of this later))

Process work:

Anywho, I'll post some more things later. I have animation projects and more things coming up. EXPECT A PORTFOLIO SITE SOON!!!1!

My first full Zbrush EXTRAVAGANZA!!

Wow, been a ride for sure! This She-Centaur has had her time with evolving and giving me loads of problems but I am glad that I have this project all together from start to finish under my belt... So this is what concept design is like.

TO THE FUTURE! weeeeeeEEEeeeeeeeeeEEEeeE!
(also I haven't slept for a while).

I feel like she's saying, "GUUUURRRRLL..."

3d Model in Zbrush and Photoshop painting. Time: Too long.

Moar Oil Paintin's!

Hey guys!

Here's some more painting studies for my class, they're the easiest to show because I have to do two (roughly) per week. Other updates soon for my Zbrush sculpt(s) and Character stuff!!

My Sargent copy (kinda) on the left 6hrs?, Sargent's Dorothy on the right.
Looks a little rosy from the iPhone pic, and with a limited palette.

Here's another figure painting, with the same palette.
(Titanium White, Cad Yellow Med, Cad Red Med, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue)

Last but not least we did a double study of the same model, high key/low key.
Same palette, a little less than 1.5 hrs for each?

Digital painting practice!

I know I am in need of some digital painting help so I did some studies, the first two are from life and the second from tumblr photos (hehe). I figure it's still okay to paint from photos if they're awesome ones, right? Right?!

These are still pretty loose and dirty, just trying to find
that traditional feel in digital... one day. One day.

Pasadena why you so pretty????

C'mon seriously, this lighting is too guud.

She is not amused.

California is a magical place! Still! Here's a little update on what kind of stuff I'm doing in my classes. For character design, we just revised our pirate heads, and made a (somewhat polished) full cast! We moved onto a new project featuring the tale of Baba Yaga, I'll give more info later but here are some character ideas for that...and more oil paintings! First color oil painting in like four/five years. Was sort of terrifying but so much fun!
Character Ideas...

Trying to consolidate designs and add form.
Another painting of my roomie Carla!

And some more model studies.

I will give you an idea of my Zbrush stuff once I'm further along this week! It's a centaur sculpt (that kicked my ass.)  I'll revisit stuff later too :)

Hey ya'll oil is fun and hard!

But here's some stuffs! I'll go by order right now, from the beginning of class. I've been taking a Color and Lighting workshop/class and I'm falling in love. I also am a bit concerned with the proportions in these, but I've got ten classes to get better! Update on California: I LOVE IT. (warning: iPhone pics and weird blogger layouting)

First painting in oils for three years!
In class model, 3 hrs

Next I had hw to copy from Sergeant, who is so intimidatingly good.
6hrs maybe? Probably more...

In class model again, super cool textures!
3 hrs

This is a from life study of my roomie Carla (Her Site!)
Probably 2-3 hrs.

I painting from life of my roommate Jarrad,
2 hrs.

I did this one today, so here's a closer shot.
